Current Event #5

I read the article "Families say flu scare comes with a dose of craziness". It was about the effects of H1N1 on people in northern VA. We all know that many people are not coming to school because they are sick. Some teachers are putting off assignments or lessons because so many people are absent. There are other people who overreact to a virus and panic, wearing face masks and gloves and barricading themselves away. Obama declared H1N1 a national emergency. It may be an emergency, but there is nothing we can do to stop it. You can't fight a disease the way you can fight terrorists in Afghanistan. Germs will get people sick, and that is sad, but no amount of hand sanitizer will stop it. If everyone panics, nothing good will come of it. We should just be grateful that in the US there are vaccines and good health care.

  1. i agree with you.nothing good ever comes of people panic and wearing facemasks and gloves is extreme. the swine flu should be taken seriously though because of all its causing but I think that if people take logical precautions like not sharing drinks and washing your hands after you use the bathroom, and of course get the flu shot, then they shouldn't be freaking out because they've done all they could.

  2. I totally agree with you. I think we should be thankful because of the provision we have in the US to combat this disease. There are a lot of countries around the world with not even the possibility to be able to get the vaccine, giving as a result a lot of dead people. I think US is pretty prepared for this flu compared with undeveloped countries, and I also think this year people are getting known with this flu and the craziness is going away if we compared it with last year, when we did not even have vaccines to combat it.

  4. I'd like to add that the regular flu kills thousands of people each year, but nobody freaks out about that. If your sick, stay home, drink herbal tea, rest, and come back to school/work when you're better.
